Common to both: rule out settings
- The oven is set to Bake or Broil, and Start was pressed on electronic controls.
- On models with a self-clean latch, the door latch is fully unlocked.
- If you removed knobs to clean them, they are back in the right positions.
- Give it a fair preheat. GE lists 15 to 20 minutes for hidden-element and gas ovens.
GE also suggests resetting the electronic controls: turn the breaker off, wait one minute, turn it back on.
Lane 1: electric ovens
Turn the oven off, switch off the breaker and unplug the range. Then look at the lower bake element. A crack, a blister or a break means it needs replacing. GE publishes this exact check for ranges whose burners work but whose oven does not. A healthy element glows red when the oven is on.
Reasonable for an owner
- Check settings and the latch.
- Inspect the element with power off.
- Reset at the breaker.
Leave to a technician
- Anything behind the rear panel.
- Control board or sensor work.
- Replacing an element if wires look scorched.
Lane 2: gas ovens
Gas ovens light through an igniter. With the oven on and the door open, you should see the igniter glow. No glow suggests a weak igniter or a control fault. Another trap for newly installed ranges: GE notes that the regulator on/off lever can be hard to spot, and with it off the top burners still work while the oven will not.
Do not touch switches. Leave the home and call 911 from outside. Then call your gas utility. Texas Gas Service lists its number on its gas leak page.
Myth check
A flashing clock after a power blip does not mean the oven is broken. GE's manuals say to reset the clock, and press Clear/Off if a cycle was interrupted. Heat that is merely uneven is a different problem from no heat at all.
What a technician will ask
- Gas or electric, and the model number on the frame or door edge.
- Whether the burners work, and whether the oven heats at all or only weakly.
- Whether anything happened first: a self-clean cycle, an outage, a move.
- Any code or flashing message on the display.
Repair or replace?
Elements and igniters are often cheap next to a new range. A control board on a range past its mid-teens is where people tend to replace. See the repair-or-replace guide, and the oven repair page for how visits work.
An Austin note
Austin Energy says it gives at least 48 hours' notice of planned outages, so a mid-cooking blackout is more likely a storm or equipment event. After any outage, reset the clock and settings before assuming a fault. Self-clean cycles in a July kitchen also add heat to a room that is already hot, so run them in the evening.
Austin ApplianceFix is not an authorized dealer or servicer for this brand. Whether a technician holds manufacturer authorization is something to ask them directly.

Questions people ask
My GE stovetop works but the oven does not. Why?
That narrows it to the oven side: a setting or latch, the bake element on electric models, or the igniter and regulator on gas ones.
Is a cracked bake element dangerous?
It should not be used. Switch the oven off at the breaker and have it replaced.
Should I replace a GE range that is fifteen years old?
Not automatically. Judge the repair quote against a new range using the repair-or-replace guide, along with any other faults.
