Frigidaire range burner not working: pick your type

A gas burner that will not light and a glass-top element that will not heat have almost nothing in common. Choose your lane first.

Lane A: gas burner will not light

  • Knob position. Frigidaire's guidance starts with the surface knob set to the Lite position.
  • Burner caps. A cap that is missing, crooked or not sitting level can stop ignition. Reseat it firmly.
  • Clogged ports. Food debris in the burner head and slots blocks gas flow. Clean them as your manual describes, with the burner cold and the knobs off.
  • Moisture. After cleaning, let the parts dry fully. Wet burner parts cause uneven flames or no flame.
  • Power. Electric-ignition ranges need the cord connected. Clicking with no flame points to the ports or the igniter.
If you smell gas

Do not use switches or phones inside. Leave the home and call 911 from outside, then your gas utility. Texas Gas Service publishes steps on its gas leak page.

Lane B: electric coil burner is cold

Switch the burner and the range off at the breaker, and let the coil cool. Check that the coil is pushed fully into its receptacle and not burned at the prongs. Swap it with a working coil of the same size. If the swapped coil heats, the coil was the problem. If the working coil goes cold in the bad socket, the receptacle or switch is at fault, and that is for a technician.

Lane C: smooth glass-top element will not heat

Frigidaire's suggested first step is a reset: unplug the range for 30 seconds, then plug it back in. If none of the elements heat and the range is new, the guidance points to a possible voltage or wiring issue. A hot-surface light that stays on after cooking is normal until the glass cools.

If you need to pull the range out

The Consumer Product Safety Commission urges owners to check that a freestanding range has an anti-tip bracket and is properly engaged in it. Whenever you slide the range out for a look, push it back into the bracket. It matters most in homes with children.

Stop and call a technician

  • You smell gas, or the flame is uneven or very tall after cleaning.
  • The coil socket looks scorched or melted.
  • One burner works, then trips the breaker.
  • A range installed in the last 30 days: Frigidaire points you back to the installer first.

What to tell the technician

  • Gas, coil or glass top, and the model number on the frame.
  • Which burners fail, and whether the oven works.
  • Whether anything boiled over just before the problem began.
  • When the range was installed, since recent installs may go back to the installer.

Repair or replace?

A burner, igniter, coil or receptacle is a small repair on a sound range. A cracked glass top or a failed main board on an older range moves toward replacement. The repair-or-replace guide helps, and range and stove repair explains a visit.

An Austin note

Condo and apartment kitchens may have a gas shutoff controlled by the building, so ask the manager before a technician arrives. In a power outage, do not assume a gas burner can be lit by hand. Check your manual first.

Austin ApplianceFix is not an authorized dealer or servicer for this brand. Whether a technician holds manufacturer authorization is something to ask them directly.

Questions people ask

Why does my burner click but not light?

Usually a dirty burner head, a misaligned cap or moisture. Clean and dry the parts, reseat the cap, and try again. Persistent clicking points to an igniter or switch.

Is it safe to light a burner with a match?

Check your manual first. Do not do it if you smell gas.

Can a landlord make me pay for a burner repair?

That depends on your lease. Tell the property manager first, since the appliance is usually theirs.
