Step one: where is the water?
| Where you see it | Most likely cause | Who fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| Inside, under the crisper drawers | Clogged or frozen defrost drain | Often you, sometimes a technician |
| Ice on the back freezer wall plus a puddle | Defrost drain frozen over, or defrost system failing | Technician |
| Front of the fridge, near the base | Overflowing drain pan, or door gasket condensation | You or a technician |
| Underneath, toward the back | Water supply line or inlet valve leak | Technician or plumber |
| At the dispenser or ice maker | Loose fitting, cracked tubing, or overfilling ice maker | Technician |
| Around the water filter | Filter not seated, cracked housing, wrong cartridge | You — reseat or replace the filter |
Contain the damage
- Shut off the water. The valve for the fridge is usually behind it or under the sink. Turn it clockwise until it stops.
- Protect electricals. If water has reached the outlet or the cord, unplug only if it is safe to reach; otherwise switch off the kitchen circuit at the breaker.
- Dry the area.Towels, then a fan. Water that sits under a fridge can swell cabinet toe-kicks and wood flooring.
- Move food if the fridge is affected.Keep perishables at 40°F or below; use a cooler if the unit has to be shut down.
The clogged defrost drain: the most common cause
During each defrost cycle, melted frost runs through a small drain at the back of the freezer or fridge into a pan near the compressor, where it evaporates. When food debris or ice blocks the drain, water backs up and spills into the compartment or onto the floor. A common home fix is to unplug the fridge, locate the drain opening at the back of the freezer, and flush it gently with warm water from a turkey baster or a syringe. If a manual or label shows the drain location, follow it, and stop if you are unsure. A drain that keeps freezing points to a failed defrost heater or its sensor.
Sweating versus leaking
In humid Austin summers, moisture can condense on the outside of a refrigerator, particularly around the door seal or where the water line or door hinge runs. A thin film is normal on some models. A steady drip, or water that continues after you dry the area, is not. Test: wipe everything dry, wait a few hours, and see whether wetness returns and where.
Dispenser, filter and ice maker leaks
- Filter housing. A cartridge that is cross-threaded, not locked in, or the wrong model will drip. Remove and reseat it, or replace it with a compatible filter.
- Dispenser tray. A small amount of water in the tray after dispensing is normal. A pool means a leak behind the panel.
- Ice maker overflow. A stuck fill valve can overfill the mold; the result looks like ice leaking over the edge and refreezing in the bin. See our ice maker not working guide.
- Supply line. A crack, a loose compression nut, or kinked plastic tubing after the fridge was pushed back can all leak slowly. Keep the line away from sharp bends when moving the unit.
A small, steady leak under a refrigerator can run for weeks unnoticed. It can rot a subfloor, grow mold and corrode electrical parts. If you find a damp spot you cannot explain, shut off the water and get it checked.
Moving the fridge safely
If you need to pull the refrigerator out, pull it straight rather than twisting. Rolling over the water line is a surprisingly common way to create a leak. On hardwood or vinyl, slide a piece of cardboard under the wheels first. If the fridge is plugged in, check that the cord is not caught as it slides.
What to tell the technician
- Exactly where the water appears and when (constantly, after the dispenser is used, during defrost).
- Whether the ice maker or water dispenser is connected, and the age of the filter.
- Whether the water is clear or discolored and whether it smells.
- Whether you have turned off the water supply.

Questions people ask
Why is water pooling inside the bottom of my refrigerator?
This is usually a blocked defrost drain. Melted frost has nowhere to go, so it collects under the drawers.
Is it safe to run a refrigerator that is leaking?
If the water is clean condensate and nowhere near electrical connections, many people keep it running while they arrange a repair. If the leak is from the water line, shut off the supply and, if needed, unplug the unit.
Can a bad water filter cause a leak?
Yes. A misinstalled or incompatible filter can drip at the housing. Reseating it or switching to the correct cartridge often resolves it.
Why is the floor wet near my refrigerator only in summer?
Humidity can cause condensation on the cabinet and on supply lines. A persistent puddle, though, still needs checking for a supply or drain issue.
