Whirlpool dishwasher not draining: follow the water

Water leaves a dishwasher in a fixed order. Walk that path from the tub outward, and the blockage usually shows itself before you reach for a phone.

Before you open anything

Whirlpool's published troubleshooting begins with basics. Did the cycle finish? A paused cycle leaves water in the tub, and the manual says to close the door and press Start/Resume. Is a fuse or breaker tripped? Foam from the wrong detergent can also stop a dishwasher from running normally. Cut power at the breaker before any hands-on step.

Two quick tests help you decide where to start. Press Cancel/Drain and listen: Whirlpool's manuals describe it as starting a two-minute drain. A pump that hums but moves no water suggests a blockage downstream. Silence points toward power, the pump or the controls, which is the start of a service call.

Stage 1: the filter and tub

Lift out the lower rack and look at the filter area. Pull out food scraps, labels and broken glass with care. Rinse the filter under running water and refit it fully seated. A monthly dishwasher cleaner, which Whirlpool's manuals recommend, keeps residue from building up here.

Stage 2: the drain hose

Pull the machine forward only if you can do it without straining the water line or cord. Look for a kink or a hose crushed against the cabinet. Straighten it. Also check that the hose rises into a high loop under the counter or connects to an air gap, so dirty sink water cannot flow back.

Stage 3: the air gap

If you have an air gap, a small fitting on the sink or counter, Whirlpool says to check and clean it whenever the dishwasher drains poorly. Lift the cover, unscrew the cap and clear any buildup.

Stage 4: the disposer connection

If the dishwasher drains into a garbage disposal, the manual asks you to confirm the knockout plug was removed from the disposer inlet. A new disposal installed with the plug still in place is a classic cause. Run the disposal clear, then check the inlet. Our garbage disposal repair page covers when that is a separate job.

What not to do. Do not pour liquid drain cleaner into the tub, do not run the dishwasher repeatedly hoping it will clear, and do not reach into the pump housing with power on. Standing water that sits for days smells and can attract insects, so bail out the tub with a cup and towel while you wait.

Stop here and call a technician

Stop if

  • The pump hums but never moves water.
  • Water leaks from the door or base.
  • The breaker trips again.
  • You smell burning.

Tell the technician

  • What you cleared and what you found.
  • Whether the sink also drains slowly.
  • The model number on the door edge label.

Repair or replace?

A drain pump, check valve or hose is usually a modest repair. On a dishwasher past about ten years old, with rust or a failing board, replacement often wins. Use the repair-or-replace guide with the written estimate in hand.

An Austin note

Many Austin kitchens were remodeled with new appliances beside older plumbing. In a condo, apartment or duplex, a slow drain in several fixtures points to a shared line that the building handles, not the dishwasher. For the appliance itself, see dishwasher repair.

Austin ApplianceFix is not an authorized dealer or servicer for this brand. Whether a technician holds manufacturer authorization is something to ask them directly.

Questions people ask

Why is there water at the bottom after a cycle?

A small amount of water is normal in many models. Standing water above the filter, or a pool that does not shrink between cycles, is not.

Can I use vinegar or a drain cleaner?

Avoid liquid drain cleaners in a dishwasher. Clear blockages by hand and use a dishwasher cleaner as the manual describes.

Does a bad air gap cause this?

It can. A clogged air gap is outside the dishwasher and is often not covered by its warranty. It is a quick check.
