Which compartment is warm?
| What you see | Think about | Safe first step |
|---|---|---|
| Freezer cold, fridge warm | Blocked vents, frost on the evaporator, a failed fan | Clear the vents; look for frost on the back wall |
| Both warm, compressor silent | Power, control board, start components | Check the outlet and breaker, then the display for a code |
| Both warm, running nonstop | Dirty coils, door not sealing, heat load | Check the door seal; clear the coils with the unit unplugged |
| Cool but not cold, frost near the ice maker | Warm air leaking in at the ice compartment | See the Samsung ice maker frozen guide |
Checks Samsung's own support pages suggest
- The flashlight test. Put a flashlight inside, close the door, and look for light leaking out. Food that stops the door from closing lets in warm, moist air and builds frost.
- Two inches of clear space in front of the vents at the back of each compartment. Once frost starts on a vent, it blocks airflow by itself, so clear it.
- Level the refrigerator. Samsung notes that a unit that is not level can leave gaps at the door and ice compartment seals.
- Do not use a hair dryer to speed up defrosting. Samsung warns it can damage the refrigerator. Let ice melt on its own, with towels at the base.
The first hour, the first day, the first call
- First hour.Put a thermometer in the fridge. Move meat, dairy and leftovers to a cooler if it reads above 40°F. Write down the model number from the label inside.
- First day.Do the checks above. Give any setting change several hours to show up, and avoid opening the doors more than you must.
- Still warm?Stop experimenting and request a visit. Note any code on the display and whether the freezer is cold.
When to stop and call a technician
Call if the compressor clicks on and off, a burning smell appears, water pools near the outlet, or frost keeps returning after you have cleared it. Sealed-system work and board repairs are not for owners.
What to tell the technician
- The model number from the label, and the age of the refrigerator.
- Which compartment is warm and what the thermometer reads in each.
- Any code, alarm icon or frost you saw, and when each began.
- Recent outages, moves or electrical work.
Repair or replace?
A fan, sensor or seal on a refrigerator under about ten years old is often worth fixing. A sealed-system quote on an older unit rarely is. Compare the written estimate with the price of a new one using the repair-or-replace guide.
An Austin note
July and August kitchens run hot, and a warm fridge is often a hot-location fridge. Also ask whether the power flickered recently. If your neighborhood lost power, Austin Energy's outage page shows what was reported. After a long outage, the fridge may need several hours to recover. The wider picture is on our refrigerator repair page.
Austin ApplianceFix is not an authorized dealer or servicer for this brand. Whether a technician holds manufacturer authorization is something to ask them directly.

Questions people ask
Why is my Samsung freezer cold but the fridge warm?
Usually cold air is not reaching the fresh-food side. Blocked vents, frost on the evaporator or a failed fan are the common reasons. Clear the vents first.
How long can food stay in a fridge that is not cooling?
During a power loss, federal guidance says about four hours if the doors stay shut. For a running but warm fridge, discard perishables held above 40°F for two hours or more.
Does Austin ApplianceFix repair Samsung refrigerators?
No. We refer requests to independent technicians. Tell us the model, and ask the technician about their experience with the brand.
